Lights of Guidance: A Comprehensive Baha'i Reference for Spiritual and Practical Issues

Lights of Guidance

This volume contains letters from Central Figures of the Bahá’í Faith and its guiding institutions, applying the spiritual principles of the Bahá’í Faith, as expressed in the revealed word of Bahá’u’lláh, to the practical problems and issues facing individual Bahá’ís and their local communities.

The purpose of this compilation is to serve as a ready reference for the institutions, pioneers, teachers, etc. The majority of the material cited within it is from the original letters of the beloved Guardian Shoghi Effendi, the Universal House of Justice and, to a lesser degree, from talks and Tablets of the three Central Figures of the Faith. All letters or quotes from ‘Bahá’í News’, journals and bulletins were authenticated or verified from transcripts from the World Centre or from various National Archives.

Hellen Hornby, the original organizer, compiled this book after she was asked to make some international teaching trips and learned that such ‘teachers are expected to know a little of everything’. Within the book, major areas covered are listed alphabetically, so Section 1 is "Administrative Order", Section 2 is "Backbiting, Criticism", etc. Within each major section are sub-divisions, such as Local Spiritual Assemblies, Annual Conventions, etc. The complete list of entries is printed at the front of the book. The 1988 edition, for example, lists 2163 letters and notes at the front, making it easier to find particular items in the main body of the book.
