About the Badi Calendar – Inaugurated by His Holiness the Bab

Updated: Oct 23, 2022

In 2014 the worldwide elected governing body of the Bahá’í Faith, the Universal House of Justice, released a momentous message, announcing for the first time the global, common implementation of the Badí‘ calendar for Bahá’ís all around the world. The Badí‘ calendar, inaugurated by Bahá’u’lláh’s forerunner, the Báb, is the first purpose built calendar to be created for a worldwide religion. It is based on astronomical rather than astrological principles and is not adapted from an older lunar calendar.

In its message of 10 July 2014, the Universal House of Justice detailed certain matters pertaining to the calendar including: the means for the determination of Naw-Rúz; the accommodation of the lunar character of the Twin Holy Birthdays of the Báb and Bahá’u’lláh within the solar year; and the fixing of the dates of other Holy Days.
